HISTORY

The site was once the property of the State of Tennessee’s first Penitentiary in 1831. After the prison was closed and moved to Centennial Blvd in 1898, Governor Benton McMillin subdivided the 10 acres. The property ran North and South between Church Street and Charlotte Avenue. One of the streets that were used to divide the property became McMillin Street, named after the late governor. The only resemblance of the past now is the old Warden’s house, today being used as one of the businesses on McMillen Street. In 2013 Jack Cawthon restored the corner of McMillin and Charlotte Avenue after many years of decline, opening his 3rd Bar-B-Que location and receiving a proclamation from the Nashville Metro Council, declaring the corner as “Governor’s Corner”. Jack later acquired the property behind Jack’s Bar-B-Que, renovating the two story building to a retro look of the 50’s, for a place of stay and naming it "McMillin Court".
